If "less is more*" is your way of life, you are certainly drawn to the ultimate return to basics of MTB riding, and therefore to a Singlespeed setup.
*less is more: less is more
Standards
- The type of freebody: Shimano or Singlespeed.
Singlespeed types
- If you are about to convert a standard cassette hub to Singlespeed, you will need a specific kit consisting of a sprocket of your chosen tooth count and a set of spacers to compensate for the lack of thickness.
- If you have a Singlespeed freebody, you simply need to fit a sprocket of your chosen tooth count.
- If your MTB frame is not designed for a Singlespeed setup, you will need a chain tensioner to maintain the tension of the MTB chain in place of the derailleur.
Which Singlespeed tooth count should you choose?
It is difficult to answer this question as it will depend on your physical ability. But generally you will find these types of setup:
- 26" MTB wheel: 18-tooth sprocket with a 33-tooth chainring.
- 27.5" MTB wheel: 18-tooth sprocket with a 32-tooth chainring.
- 29" MTB wheel: 19-tooth sprocket with a 32-tooth chainring.
