Ortlieb, the brand launched by Hartmut Ortlieb, was created in the early 1980s, upon returning from a trip to England. Young Hartmut, who cycled every day in the rain and found himself sleeping in wet clothes and a wet sleeping bag, decided to create a waterproof pannier as soon as he returned to Germany. The growing number of friends and shopkeepers asking him for panniers of this type gradually encouraged him to manufacture his product in series. Rear and front panniers and handlebar bags then formed the first Ortlieb range. Word of mouth about the quality and functionality of the products then ensured the best possible communication for the German brand.

Today outdoor cycling, cycle touring, city cycling and trekking are increasingly widespread and Ortlieb has followed demand by extending its expertise to a wide range of products.
