How to fit a road bike stem?

Your new stem has just been delivered? Can't wait to feel the difference when you're on your bike? Here's how to fit this component without making any mistakes.

Stages

  1. Place the stem on the steerer tube of your fork, then begin tightening the retaining bolts just enough to stop it moving.
    Probikeshop tip: depending on the stem, the height at the clamp on the steerer tube can vary, so always check that the stem protrudes approximately 3 mm above the steerer tube.

  2. Place the stem cap with its bolt without tightening it yet.

  3. Then fit the handlebar onto the stem and tighten the faceplate bolts evenly to the torque specified by the manufacturer.
    Probikeshop tip: if the handlebar or stem are made of carbon, it is recommended to use assembly paste at the contact point between these two components to reduce the required clamping torque and avoid damaging them.

  4. Align the cockpit with the wheel, adjust the headset bearing play, then tighten the bolts to the torque specified by the manufacturer.

Once everything is assembled, it is recommended to go for a short ride and then check that nothing has come loose and that your position on the bike is correct.
