HAIBIKE - The Story

The beginning of the Haibike adventure

The brand was launched in 1995 by Felix and Susanne Puello. The latter was then CEO of Winora Group – one of the world's largest distributors in the cycling industry, stemming from the Engelbert Wiener company founded by her great-grandfather. The bikes were first offered under the parent brand name Winora, before quickly taking on the Haibike name. In the following years, the brand continued its technological development and expanded its range.

World's first electric mountain bike

The ancestor of the electric mountain bike, the HaibikeeQ XDuro, was unveiled at Eurobike 2010. It was an immediate success. The inverted motor concept and the original style were subsequently copied on numerous occasions. The original range comprised four models (Fully, Hardtail, Cross & Trekking).

Shortly after, Haibike became the first manufacturer in the world to introduce gravity casting technology. This process, derived from the motorcycle industry, makes it possible to produce complex parts and components that are particularly strong and precise while remaining lightweight. This technology is applied primarily to the motor suspension and forms the core of the frame. Since then, this technology has been adopted by many competitors.

Range development

The range expanded and now includes eleven models, with additional variants. Among the models is the eQ XDuro 29, an electric mountain bike combining two major trends: 29-inch wheels and e-bikes. At Eurobike 2011, Haibike presented the XDuro Race, the result of research into designing a fast electric racing bike. The positive response from experts and professionals, along with encouraging test rides, led Haibike to develop a production electric racing bike for the 2014 season; this marked the beginning of a new category of fast road bikes.

The range grows and now includes 17 models, among which the first electric AllMountain which, with its 150 mm travel, paves the way for the future trend of long-travel electric bikes.

For the first time, Haibike also presents a fast 45 km/h e-bike, the XDuro Trekking S. The "eQ" prefix disappears, and the name "XDuro", a portmanteau of X-Cross & Enduro, becomes the sole model name.

Haibike introduces the motor guard

Haibike presents a completely revised range. With 37 models and numerous innovations: a new motor, a brand new aluminium platform, the double bend of the top tube, the angled shock absorber positioning and the motor guard. This component protects the motor against damage and scratches. Unlike the first XDuro models where the motor was integrated into the frame upside down, the new motor is mounted beneath the frame and would therefore be unprotected without this guard. Subsequently, more and more brands adopted the motor guard, which gradually became the distinguishing feature of sporty e-MTBs.

That same year sees the presentation of an electric bike set to shake up the market: the XDuro Nduro. With its 180 mm travel, it opens up a young sporting discipline to a new audience.

The year 2013 was also marked by the launch of road models, transposing the XDuro philosophy to the road. The result was the XDuro Race, the first mass-produced electric racing bike, and the Superrace, a fast electric racer.

The XDuro gains a younger sibling: the HaibikeSDuro, featuring a new Yamaha motor, presented exclusively by Haibike. The SDuro, thanks to its handling, reliability and affordable price, is an immediate success, propelling the Yamaha motor to second place among the leading drive systems.

2014 also marks the arrival of the first electric mountain bike with electronic suspension management and the first electric full-suspension carbon bike with a mid-drive motor.

First electric DH bike

With the XDuro Dwnhll Pro, Haibike presents a DH bike equipped with a powerful motor, making the previously unthinkable possible: a true downhill bike that the rider can equally ride uphill without a lift or shuttle. All barriers are lifted, opening up an unprecedented playground.

Launch of the eConnect system

With eConnect, Haibike connects the electric mountain bike and offers previously unseen digital opportunities. A small unit integrated into the bike sends and receives data, enabling among other things GPS anti-theft monitoring, bike geolocation, route recording and data export. All information is displayed and managed via a dedicated app. Haibike is thus the first to pave the way for the smart bike.

That year, the brand designed its own stem integrating the screen, ensuring clean lines and optimal protection in the event of a fall.

Presentation of the Modular Rail System (MRS)
and the InTube Battery concept

Thanks to the Modular Rail System (MRS), it is easy and quick to fit various accessories directly to the bike. A mounting rail is integrated into the down tube to position a bottle, or a bag for example, in the ideal spot.

The integrated battery concept (IBC), available on many models in the range, offers a new level of integration, aesthetics and functionality.

Launch of the FLYON concept

Haibike takes a new direction in 2019 with the introduction of a complete system comprising frame, motor and battery, achieving an unprecedented level of integration and top-end performance.

Named FLYON, this concept is found across the XDuro NDuro, AllMtn, AllTrail and Adventr.

Inspiring "Haibike Heroes"

The brand has also surrounded itself with extraordinary individuals, all won over by its electric models. Freeriders, a rescued rider and adventurers, the richness of their profiles is as valuable as their experience.

True pioneers, they have each pushed the limits of their machine and helped establish what was once a simple pastime as a sport in its own right.

Sam Pilgrim

Accompanied by his XDURO, the Englishman ventures onto the most committed trails, tries out new tricks and sends big jumps, once a rarity on electric mountain bikes. Very active on YouTube, he has also taken part in various FMB World Tour events.

Andi Wittman

Regarded as one of the world's best Dirt riders and holder of the high jump record at 5.60 m, Andi discovered electric bikes following a serious crash. Determined to regain all his abilities, the German initially used the e-bike purely as "moral support" before definitively adopting it as his everyday training partner.

Maximilian Semsch

An insatiable adventurer, Maximilian embarked in 2012 on a full tour of Australia — a total of 16,000 km — having already ridden from Singapore to Munich a few years earlier. This time, however, he opted for an electric bike and completed his journey in 187 days, successfully overcoming every challenge. Today, he continues to explore new horizons, always accompanied by his Haibike.
