How to choose your road bike valve extenders?

High-profile rims inevitably require longer valves than the classic 32 mm ones to inflate your tire or tubular. Whether for one or the other, you may need extension tubes if you don't have a choice of valve length. Here's how to choose them.

  • Length: from 25 to 75 mm

Valve extension types

In the case of inner tubethere are models with valves directly adapted to the correct length. If, however, you don't have a choice, or if you're in tubularthere are 2 types of mounting:

If your valve's shell is removable, you can fit an extension tube between the valve body and the shell. This assembly is the most reliable and locks the valve in place after use.

If the shell can't be dismantled, you can fit a conventional extender, but you'll need to leave the valve lock open at all times, as you won't be able to access it.

Regarding length, there are several sizes depending on the height of your rim. Once fitted, you need at least 10 mm of valve protrusion to fit your pump.

Which valve extender should I choose?

If you have a removable valve obus, opt for the extension type, which is much more reliable and easier to use.

As far as length is concerned, take the following: rim height + 5/6 mm - original valve height = valve extender length.
