Bike pedals – Clipless pedals

The pedals are one of the 3 contact points between the cyclist and their road bike (along with the handlebar and the saddle). From flat pedals, we moved to toe clips and then to clipless pedals in the 1980s thanks to the company Look, which adapted its ski binding system for use on bicycles. Today, most road bikes are fitted with clipless pedals: these provide greater comfort, performance and stability while pedalling, whilst also allowing a quick "release" in the event of a stop or a fall.

Bike pedals – A particular system

Road pedals from the main manufacturers (except Speedplay) all use the same system with minor differences. Like a ski binding, this involves engaging the cleat on the front of the pedal before "clipping in" with the rear of the cleat thanks to the spring located at the back of the pedal. "Unclipping" is done by turning the heel outwards. Angular float is managed by adjustments on the pedal or by changing the cleat depending on the brand. The Speedplay system differs slightly from the others in that it has 2 engagement faces, as on the MTB pedals, and the spring as well as the angular float adjustments are located on the cleat. There is also no longer any need to engage from the front of the pedal.
